| Keywords: | Donkey |
| Issue Date: | 28-Nov-2005 |
| Series/Report no.: | Roosevelt Civil War Envelopes Collection ; page 122 ; image 3 |
| Description: | A donkey labeled "Eastern Virginia" is leaning off the edge of a cliff. A man labeled "Western Virginia" is pulling on the donkey's tail trying to keep him from falling off the cliff. West Virginia stayed in the Union while the rest of Virginia went over to the Confederacy. West Virginia became a state of its own during the Civil War. The donkey is most likely a representation of the Southern Democrats who took Virginia out of the Union. The left of the image appears "Copyright secured by Brown & Ryan. New York." |
