GWU Historical Photographs

or browse

This collection of images contains photographs and negatives of individuals, localities, objects, buildings, events, and groups associated with the history of the University. It is one of the strongest photograph collections within the University Archives representing a photographic time-line of the history of The George Washington University from approximately 1859 through late 1980s.

Although there are some scenes covering the late 19th century, its strength lies in capturing campus life, people, buildings, and events from the 1930s to 1980s. Elmer Louis Kayser's (1896-1985) work to collect many of these images as professor of European History (1917-67) and University Historian (1962-85) at GW formed the original collection. The University Archives welcomes donations of images preferably ones that are described and dated that may be added to this collection.
