-To O’Mahony from R. Doherty-November 22, 1864
22 November 1864, Lafayette.
Acknowledges letter of i6th inst 'and in reply have to say that I do not consider the contents of the letter of Mr
Stephens at all satisfactory inasmuch as I think that Mr Coyne has not complied with the instructions which
he received from the Central Council.' Will
earnestly cooperate with whatever action i s decided on. Understood that Mr Coyne's mission 'was
to ascertain by personal experience
the extent and present condition of the organization at home, and, with
assurance of my unboun[d]ed confidence in
all the officers of the organization, I have to say that I cannot see the use
of having an envoy sent home for pe[r]sonal
experiance to report to the Central Council
and then to take the representations of individuals.'
P.S. The first letter he has written
for a month, 'you will please excuse it.'
