-To O’Mahony from J. Warren-October 18, 1864
l8 October 1864, Boston.
Encloses list [missing} of the names
of the officers of the N[ew] E[ngland] Circles, F.B. Acknowledges receipt of
commission for Owen J. Nash of Wilton, New
Hampshire. Mr Hynes is doing well 'and has a rich field on which to work. I would recommend the necessity of appointing another
organizer for the N[ew] E[ngland] district
as it is empossible for him to attend effeciently to six states which embrace such a
large number of towns.' A 'smart man' should be appointed immediately for Rhode Island,
Connecticut, and Vermont. Hynes would have all he could do to attend to
Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine. Should be borne in mind that there are
more towns and villages in New England than in all the rest of the country. 'Our cause
never was in a better condition than it is at the present time in this locality,
and our enemies appear to have emigrated.'
Numbers increasing daily by the adhesion of 'some
of the best men in the country.' Mr Cavanagh would oblige him by inquiring if Major D. Mehan still
resides at 4 Crosby St,
New York, or, if he has left, where 'I can
find him by letter.'
