-To O’Mahony from Richard Quinn, Centre-June 28, 1864
28 June 1864, Davenport. Has received letter
from Mr McCarthy stating he is with Mr Daly
[James Stephens] 'visiting the Circles in the
States and collecting money and arms. We have no objection to all this
providing it is judicious to ship arms from this country. In this I have my
doubts.' Has every confidence in O'Mahony ; knows he would not agree to any action that
would harm the organization. Read McCarthy's letter to a meeting of the Circle ; some thought the proposal premature ; others regretted Mr Daly had not come and given
an account of 'the state of our organization
at home.' 'If
the Central Executive and Mr McCarthy had visited our Circle I believe he would
have got about twice as much as we now send.' Is not expressing lack of confidence in any
officer of the organization ; 'on the contrary I have the utmost confidence in
them.' Encloses a draft for $100 'for the
Central Executive and when the time comes for the rising up of the people in
Ireland you may depend on the Davenport Circle although composed of poor
working men.' Endorsed: Answered 3
July 1864.
