-To O’Mahony from J. Jackson (Stephens)-July 9, 1863

9 July [1863], Dublin. Opens without salutation, 'Received through Mr [Thomas] Grant the sum of ^50. It is well to send as large an order as possible as ^50 together enables me to do more than {,100 in small sums. A few words only for the present. I have just finished a tour of 5 weeks and have found all sound and resolved. I am proud of them, and my confidence in them is no less than in myself. "If I can only maintain discipline, etc." Why, I defy any army to show such discipline, and I can maintain it in the face of every difficulty. Considerable extension of business during my tour; impossible to reach on all the calls but I certainly did a sound trade. Leave again in two or three days—soon as I have given a certain shape and extension to affairs here. This trip will find me on quite new ground—in Connaught, Ulster, Scotland, England. I promise you good work. Tell Pagan [Patrick O'Leary] I shall write him a long letter by next post. Knowing how I have been occupied he will excuse the delay. Hundreds of his friends from all parts desire to be remembered to him. Have you ever mentioned what I proposed about the Col. [Michael Doheny] to his family ? If so, and that Mrs. D. approves, let me have all the materials possible soon as you can. In much haste. Yours fraternally.'
