-To O’Mahony from E. Bourke-August 8, 1860

Lower lefthand portion of letter missing. 'Copy' in top lefthand comer.

8 August 1860, Kilkenny city. Arrived here yesterday. Called on 'Mr Hal' [John Haltigan], who 'introduced me to several of our friends, they all report very favourably, our house is flourishing rapidly, we will soon be prepared to declare a very handsome dividend.' Greatest need is for American capital, 'if we had that it would put us right on our feet.' Manufactories here very extensive, plenty of workmen, but 'they want some scientific managers, say a couple of thousand, [who] should bring their tools with them.' Very poor machinery here ; cannot work or compete with other nations until they get money from America, Materials first class ; raw material perfect; knowledge very imperfect; they need 'cute Irish Yankees' to teach them how to work to the best advantage. Saw 'our friends' in Dublin ; they are examining the books, which will soon show a very fair profit, 'perfectly satisfactory to all the stockholders.
